The Government of Mongolia is preparing to launch construction of the new terminal expansion at Chinggis Khaan International Airport.
During the official visit to Japan, the Minister met with Japanese partners, including JICA and Oriental Consultants Global. During these meetings, the Minister has shared recent policy updates to finalize the remaining feasibility and design work to start construction as early as possible, as the passenger traffic growth in Mongolia has reached levels that require urgent capacity expansion.

Preliminary planning includes traffic projections extending to 2039, covering both passenger and cargo flow growth. The expansion aims to significantly increase terminal capacity, modernize facilities, and introduce advanced management and service systems aligned with international standards.
As part of the transitional strategy during construction, the Minister formally proposed reactivating “Buyant-Ukhaa” International Airport for domestic flight operations. This reactivation would support operational load-sharing between the two airports and ensure continuity of service during the expansion project. The proposal has been submitted to relevant Japanese government agencies and stakeholders, including Mitsubishi Corporation, which represents the Japanese side’s shareholding in the New Ulaanbaatar International Airport LLC.

The airport expansion project, combined with the reactivation of "Buyan-Ukhaa" International Airport and the proposed Light Rail Transit connection, would satisfy both international and domestic traffic demand and ease the current pressure.
