New Airport Terminal set for potential LRT link

Mongolia is advancing plans to connect the expanding “Chinggis Khaan” International Airport with the Ulaanbaatar city center through a Light Rail Transit (LRT) system. During the official visit to Japan, Minister Delgersaikhan formally presented Mongolia’s proposal to the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism, JICA and other stakeholders, to cooperate on the LRT line linking the airport to the capital. In this regard, the Oriental Consultants Global Co., Ltd presented their preliminary study concepts related to the LRT alignment and technical possibilities.

The Minister emphasized that the airport expansion project and the LRT system must be planned and implemented in an integrated manner to ensure seamless passenger mobility, reduce travel time, enhance safety, and improve overall service quality. He highlighted that international experience, particularly Japan’s successful integration of airports with rail networks, demonstrates the economic and environmental benefits of high-capacity, reliable rail connections.

The proposed LRT system would provide efficient, environmentally friendly, and time-saving transportation between the airport and central Ulaanbaatar. It will significantly improve the passenger experience and support long-term urban development goals. The Government of Mongolia intends to continue technical consultations and feasibility assessments with Japanese partners to advance the project toward implementation
