Mongolia Discusses Infrastructure Cooperation with EU Ambassador and European Investment Bank Representatives

Minister Delgersaikhan Borkhuu received H.E. Ms. Ina Marčiulionytė, Ambassador of the European Union to Mongolia, and representatives of the European Investment Bank (EIB) to discuss expanding cooperation in the transport sector.

The parties exchanged views on enhancing Mongolia-EU collaboration, particularly regarding potential EIB financing for key infrastructure projects in Mongolia. Minister Delgersaikhan highlighted two priority projects: the expansion of the Lun–Kharkhorin road and the four-lane expansion of the Zamyn-Uud–Khushigtiin Khundii road and conveyed Mongolia’s interest in partnering with the EIB.

He mentioned that Zamyn-Uud–Khushigtiin Khundii road carry 78% of Mongolia’s total imported freight and serve as vital regional trade routes. Given the high traffic and economic potential, we aim to upgrade nearly 1,000 km of roads connecting our two neighbors into four-lane highways. Our focus is on investing in the busiest, most economically beneficial roads — those capable of generating revenue to repay loans.

Ambassador Marčiulionytė and EIB representatives thanked the Minister for the detailed project overview. Drawing from her experience as a former ambassador to Laos, Ambassador Marčiulionytė noted that her team has worked on similar road development projects and sees potential to apply that experience in Mongolia.

At the conclusion of the meeting, the EU delegation announced plans to organize a Business Forum in Ulaanbaatar on October 13–14, 2025, involving European companies operating in Mongolia, Russia, and China. The forum will offer an opportunity for the Ministry of Road and Transport Development to present its priority projects to potential European investors.
