The Action Plan of the Government of Mongolia for 2020-2024 term includes conducting a risk assessment of Khuvsgul Lake ecosystem pollution and to organize in cooperation with international organizations of the retrieval of vehicles and equipment submerged.
Within the framework of this work, from 20-27 September 2021, National Emergency Management Agency, Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Russian Federation, Environmental Search and Rescue Team organized a joint training to locate sunken ship “Sukhbaatar” as well as other vehicles and objects on the bed of Khuvsgul Lake and to carry out location mapping, research and training for divers and rescuers.
A team of 9 people from the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Russian Federation, Environmental Search and Rescue Team participated with special tools and equipment, such as an sonars and underwater UAVs capable of conducting search operations under water up to 300 meters deep.
In addition, Mongolia organized theoretical and practical diving training for emergency workers with the help of Russian experts and trainers in order to independently rescue sunken vehicles in Khuvsgul Lake.
The Maritime Administration of Mongolia under the Ministry of Road and Transport Development provided 8.3 meter-long, special equipped boats and other technical support to the rescue operation and enrolled its personnel and state inspectors in this training operation.
